Chevron Phillips Chemical Adds New Ryton® PPS Grades for Food Contact Applications

The Woodlands, TX (August 13, 2014) - Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) is introducing two new grades to its Ryton® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) product line for use in food contact applications. These high performance compounds - R-4-232NA and R-4-222NA - meet U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and EU Commission Regulation 10/2011.

"At Chevron Phillips Chemical, we are continuously innovating our line of Ryton® PPS products to meet the evolving needs of the dynamic markets we serve," said Greg Harkness, Business Development Manager, Engineering Polymers at Chevron Phillips Chemical. "We recognized the need for a durable, food-contact grade thermoplastic material and are confident these new compounds will deliver an excellent alternative to metals."

Like all products in the Ryton® PPS portfolio, the new grades deliver superior chemical resistance and dimensional stability in extreme temperatures. With this combination of properties, the compounds are well-suited for applications that require intricate parts and need to withstand hot water, sterilization and chemical disinfectants, such as coffee maker brewing chambers and food processing components.

"Engineers and product designers have come to rely on Ryton® PPS as a superior material for applications that require long-term dimensional stability and resistance to harsh environments," said Kyle Mathis, Engineering Polymers General Manager at Chevron Phillips Chemical. "When compared to metals, the new grades provide them with a greater level of design freedom for new innovations and productivity while meeting today's industry and regulatory standards."

Ryton® R-4-232NA PPS resin is a 40 percent glass filled, high flow grade providing excellent chemical resistance to hot water, sterilization and chemical disinfectants.  Ryton® R-4-222NA PPS resin is a 40 percent glass filled grade specially formulated for enhanced mechanical strength for applications with constant or repeated exposure to hot water.
