About the project
At our facility in Sweeny, Texas, CPChem is replacing a furnace within one of our existing ethylene units. This new furnace is designed to reduce fuel consumption and carbon intensity by approximately 30 percent compared to traditional technologies.
This project will help lower the intensity of emissions generated by the production of the basic chemicals the society needs.
Benefits of the new furnace:
-
Designed to reduce fuel consumption and carbon intensity by approximately 30 percent compared to traditional technologies
-
Increase long-term reliability
-
Increase overall production capacity
-
Improve operational efficiency and energy use
Current phase:
We have received our construction permit with structural work progressing on schedule. The construction is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Safety measures:
At CPChem, our safety performance is in the top quartile of the industry, and the health of our communities and the environment is important to us. During construction and operations, we strive for zero incidents and injuries.
Economic impact:
We are proud to contribute an annual economic impact of $1.7 billion, driving growth, job creation, and prosperity in the communities we serve. The construction of the new furnace has created 150 jobs.
Community impact:
There will be minimal traffic disruption expected during construction.
Next steps:
We have applied for a revision to the existing Title V operating permit from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to operate the new furnace. The TCEQ has conducted stringent evaluations of our permit application. Their thorough review process helps ensure that we meet the highest environmental and safety standards.
A public hearing will be held on Jan. 14, 2025, at 7 p.m. at Columbus Club Hall, 20632 N Highway 36, Brazoria, Texas 77422. The purpose of the hearing is to enable the public to learn about the permit application and ask questions of TCEQ and CPChem about the permit.
