Chevron Phillips Chemical Facilities Earn Distinguished VPP Star Among Stars “Star of Excellence” Award

THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (June 5, 2007) - Four Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) facilities received the distinguished Star Among Stars "Star of Excellence" award at the recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Region VI Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) conference. The award is the highest honor bestowed on VPP Star sites. The facilities honored include Chevron Phillips Chemical's:

  • Drilling Specialties Alamo Plant in Conroe, Texas
  • Headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas
  • Performance Pipe Pryor Plant in Pryor, Oklahoma
  • Port Arthur Plant in Port Arthur, Texas

OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program was designed to recognize worksites with exemplary safety and health programs and identify facilities that serve as a benchmark for others in safety performance.  The Star Among Stars program further recognizes the top performers in VPP by comparing total case incidence rates (TCIR) and days away/restricted/transferred case incidence rates (DART) with the national average as calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Companies with incidence rates at least 90 percent below the national average for their industry qualify for the "Star of Excellence" award.

"To be recognized as having several of the elite VPP Star sites in Region VI is an honor for our company," said Greg Hanggi, vice president of environment, health and safety.  "We believe in the basic principles of VPP: compliance, participation, leadership and continuous improvement.  The framework of VPP coupled with our safety culture yielded tremendous results - all four facilities honored were injury and incident free in 2006."

Company-wide, Chevron Phillips Chemical has lowered its recordable incident rate by more than 50 percent since the company's formation and approximately one-half of its facilities were injury-free in 2006.

"Through their accomplishments, our employees have demonstrated yet again that safety truly is the culture of Chevron Phillips Chemical," said Ray Wilcox, president and chief executive officer.

OSHA established VPP in 1982 as a premier partnership with labor and management.  Of the six million eligible facilities in the U.S., approximately 1,200 have achieved the prestigious VPP Star.  Currently, 410 facilities within OSHA Region VI are VPP Stars with 109 sites receiving the Star of Excellence for 2006.
