Chevron Phillips Chemical Company Names President’s Safety Award Recipients

THE WOODLANDS, TX (March 17, 2008) - Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) today announced that two of its petrochemical facilities, along with  its ten-site Performance Pipe division, are recipients of the 2007 President's Safety Award - the company's highest safety honor.

"We are proud to present these facilities our President's Safety Award for demonstrating Chevron Phillips Chemical's culture of safety in their day-to-day operations," said Greg Hanggi, Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety. "We take safety and our commitment to an injury and incident-free workplace very seriously. Our goal is zero injuries, which requires that we hold ourselves to high standards for improving safety," Hanggi said.

Only plant facilities that first receive the company's Safety Excellence Award are eligible to apply for the President's Safety Award. The deciding criteria include low employee and contractor injury rates, low incident rates, extraordinary challenges, certifications or recognition from the industry or their community, and lastly, demonstration of year-over-year improvements with implementation of new and improved safety processes.

Large Petrochemical

Chevron Phillips Chemical's Cedar Bayou plant received the award in the "Large Petrochemical" category for setting a "best ever" recordable injury rate, as well as for conducting over 700 focused audits on critical safety and health-related procedures - in 2007 alone. Cedar Bayou employees have maintained a consistent downward trend of injury rates throughout the last five years.

Small Petrochemical

Chevron Phillips Chemical's St. James plant won the 2007 award for the "Small Petrochemical" category by finishing the year without a single recordable injury - a streak that has stretched 636 days and counting at year end. In 2007, St. James management also implemented new facility siting standards to meet company, API, and plant requirements. Lastly, the plant was also awarded the Union Pacific Chemical Transportation Safety Pinnacle Award for 2006 and 2007.

Chevron Phillips Chemical's Tessenderlo, Belgium, plant shares the 2007 "Small
Petrochemical" award with the St. James plant for once again ending the year without a single recordable injury. Tesenderlo has now logged over seven years and 1.2 million hours without a recordable incident. Last year, Tessenderlo management conveyed the plant's safety procedures (PSM) to employees and contractors via a new online learning tool. The plant also implemented new engineering controls to reduce noise hazards.

Non-Petrochemical

The entire ten-site Performance Pipe division of Chevron Phillips Chemical won the 2007 President's Safety Award in the "Non-Petrochemical" category with a 57 percent reduction in recordable injuries for the year. Performance Pipe's total recordable injury rate is almost 10 times better than the industry average for plastic pipe and fittings manufacturers. To achieve this distinction, Performance Pipe focused on enabling employees to exercise leadership in safety at every level of the organization through new and innovative processes. As a result, seven of 10 Performance Pipe facilities finished the year with zero recordable injuries.
