Cedar Bayou Plant and Pasadena Plastics Complex Win IRECA Honors

THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (July 10, 2007) - Cedar Bayou and Pasadena Plastics Complex Emergency Rescue Teams received second and third place honors respectively, at the International Rescue and Emergency Care Association's (IRECA) annual competition, held June 16 through 19 in Boise, Idaho. The program provides education, competition and networking opportunities for emergency response and rescue team members.

Teams must successfully complete four emergency scenarios by securing potentially dangerous scenes, controlling life-threatening situations, performing patient exams, caring for secondary injuries and preparing patients for transport. Live patients are used in the competition, and scenarios are reproduced from actual emergency situations. The scenarios are chosen to stretch the abilities of even the most experienced emergency responders. Both Chevron Phillips Chemical teams competed against municipal and industrial teams from around the country.

Veteran team member and Cedar Bayou Fire Safety Specialist Bruce Mathis said the competition validates the emergency response teams' skill levels.

"When you're competing in front of hundreds of your peers, including the most qualified people in the industry, this training makes the real-life scenario that much easier to handle," Mathis said. "The competition gives emergency responders the confidence they need to successfully handle any situation."

Pasadena Plastic Complex Fire and Security Chief Ron Sommers said the Pasadena team was honored to place in only its second year to compete.

"To prepare for this competition, we hunkered down and trained, trained, trained," Sommers said. "The philosophy is simple: the competition indicates how well you can handle pressure and it gives you the confidence and the competence to handle the real situations."
