| Considering the exceptional chemical resistance of Ryton® PPS, it might seem surprising that one of the most aggressive environments for Ryton® PPS compounds is hot water. At elevated temperatures, water actually has a greater tendency to weaken Ryton® PPS injection molding compounds than automotive fuels and lubricants or organic solvents such as methanol, acetone, or ethyl acetate. Water does not attack or dissolve the PPS polymer, but it may seep down the interfaces between the PPS polymer matrix and the glass fiber reinforcement and break down molecular linkages between the polymer and the glass. When the adhesion between the polymer and the glass fiber reinforcement is compromised, the compound will lose a significant degree of strength. The severity of this mode of attack becomes progressively worse at higher temperatures, however we have seen that the ultimate degree of reduction in performance is generally realized within the first four weeks of exposure, after which little further reduction in performance is typically observed. Ryton® R-4-220NA and Ryton® R-4-220BLhave been specially formulated for enhanced resistance to this mode of attack.
