PPS-based Alloys Developed for Stringent Demands of Electronic and Automotive Applications

THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (April 11, 2005) – Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP’s (Chevron Phillips Chemical) polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) compounds have long been considered a choice material for electronic and automotive applications subject to high temperatures and harsh solvents. Expanding upon this portfolio’s capabilities, Xtel® XK PPS alloys have been introduced to meet specific manufacturers’ needs for high impact strength, enhanced flow rates and minimal flashing while maintaining the high heat and chemical resistance characteristics of glass filled PPS compounds.  Xtel® XK PPS alloys also provide lower moisture absorption, better dimensional strength, and less creep than high temperature nylon and PPA materials.

Xtel® XK PPS alloys XK2040, XK2140, XK2240 and XK2340 grades supply manufacturers with a good combination of mechanical strength and electrical properties. When testing the alloy’s mechanical strength at temperatures exceeding 180° C against PPA, LCP and PCT, Xtel® XK alloys outperform the competing materials with a tensile strength of 185 MPa.  These alloys also deliver greater impact strength compared to traditional PPS compounds, an important characteristic for withstanding the load force encountered in assembly line conditions.

Molded with water-cooled molds instead of the normal hot oil temperature control normally utilized in PPS processing, Xtel® XK alloys also exhibit exceptionally high flow in thin wall sections at fast cycle times. This enables automotive and electronic component manufacturers the ability to process the alloys at faster cycle times and fill thin-walled molds, without the costly step of deflashing.

Xtel® XK2040 alloys and Xtel® XK2140 alloys are flame retardant with the UL 94 rating of V-0.

“Chevron Phillips Chemical’s PPS alloys are our answer to the ever changing needs and demands of the market,” said Waverly Duggar, Ryton® PPS Business Development Specialist. “With the chemical and heat resistance of our PPS combined with the strength and ductility of these alloys, customers have a wide selection of Chevron Phillips Chemical PPS grades to suit their most challenging material needs.”

Xtel® PPS alloys are produced worldwide by Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC and its affiliates. For more information about Xtel® PPS, call 1-877-RYTON66 or email Ryton@cpchem.com.
