THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (October 9, 2006) – Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC (Chevron Phillips Chemical) recently presented the President’s Environmental Award to two of its facilities: a polystyrene plant in Zhangjiagang, China and its Performance Pipe plant in Williamstown, Kentucky. The President’s Environmental Award was established in 2005 as a way to promote and recognize the efforts of Chevron Phillips Chemical’s facilities in environmental improvement initiatives.
“Chevron Phillips Chemical is committed to reducing our impact on the environment while continuing to provide top quality chemicals for consumer and industrial products,” said Ray Wilcox, President and CEO. “We have the privilege of operating in 36 communities around the world, and we take our role in the community very seriously. It is important for our employees, their children, and our neighbors to know that we hold ourselves to the highest standards of environmental performance.”
Facilities eligible for the President’s Environmental Award have achieved superior environmental performance as well as sustained consistent pollution prevention results. In addition, the facilities must have shown environmental leadership beyond compliance that serve as a model to the public and local governments for responsible environmental stewardship. Chevron Phillips Chemical recognizes two facilities each year with the President’s Environmental Award – a chemical manufacturing site and a non-chemical manufacturing site.
Winning as a chemical manufacturing site, the Zhangjiagang plant has sustained reductions in hazardous waste, wastewater, air emissions, and fuel consumption in addition to garnering significant external recognition by the Chinese government and community. The plant received China’s Top Ten and Top 100 Environmental Protection Award, was classified as a “Green Plant” by China EPA, and was honored with the Suzhou Environmentally Friendly Enterprise Recognition Award.
As a non-chemical manufacturing facility, Performance Pipe’s Williamstown plant has achieved significant energy, wastewater, and material waste reductions. The plant processed approximately 3 million pounds of scrap production, avoiding landfill disposal and reducing the amount of contaminated or unusable material by 23 percent.
The plant also participates in numerous community outreach and clean-up programs to improve the environmental quality of Williamstown.
“Environmental stewardship is a key component of our operational excellence management system,” said Greg Hanggi, Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety. “These awards recognize the many ways that our employees and facilities demonstrate their exceptional commitment to environmental performance.”
