BAYTOWN, TEXAS (August 4, 2006) – Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP’s (Chevron Phillips Chemical) Cedar Bayou Plant Emergency Rescue Team was recently named the World Champion by the International Rescue and Emergency Care Association (IRECA). IRECA’s annual conference, held this year in Puyallup, Washington, provides education, competition, and networking opportunities for emergency response and rescue members.
“I am extremely proud of our emergency response and rescue team,” said Dan Coombs, Chevron Phillips Chemical’s Cedar Bayou Plant Manager. “They are an outstanding team and an asset to the plant and the community.”
The Cedar Bayou Plant team competed against municipal and industrial teams from the United States and Canada. Teams must successfully complete four emergency scenarios in which they secure the scene, control all life threatening situations, perform patient exams, care for secondary injuries, and prepare patients for transport. The scenarios are designed to stretch the abilities of even the most experienced teams.
“To witness the competition and see the passion our team members have for rescue and emergency response is exciting,” said Jeremy Lancaster, Fire and Safety Supervisor at Chevron Phillips Chemical’s Cedar Bayou Plant. “Winning the competition is fun, but the real value is in the expertise this team brings to the Cedar Bayou Plant and the community as they are prepared to respond at a moment’s notice.”
Members of the Cedar Bayou Plant Emergency Rescue Team are Terry Bridwell, Mike Butts, David Fullbright, Kyle Hensley, John Hollaway, Bruce Mathis, David Matthies, Reggie Nalley, Ryan Nichter, Kris Pollio, and Alex Villarreal.
In addition to earning first place in the overall competition, several team members were recognized with individual awards, including:
- David Fullbright – Best Team Captain
- Terry Bridwell and David Matthies – Best Team Medics
- John Hollaway – Top Score on the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Written Exam
- Bruce Mathis, Ryan Nichter, and David Matthies – Spirit Award in the Basic Life Support (BLS) Medic Competition
- John Hollaway, Terry Bridwell, and Kris Pollio – Second Place in BLS Medic Competition
Chevron Phillips Chemical’s Cedar Bayou Plant has participated in the IRECA competition for 16 years, earning the top prize six times.
