THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (July 11, 2006) – For an unprecedented fourth year, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP’s (Chevron Phillips Chemical) Port Arthur Plant was recently honored with the Texas Chemical Council’s (TCC) “Excellence in Caring for Texas” award. The Port Arthur Plant won the distinction in the Class II category for facilities with 61 to 200 employees.
The award recognizes continuous improvement by TCC member companies relative to their performance in community awareness, emergency response, security, and pollution prevention.
In community awareness, the Port Arthur Plant participated in community outreach programs such as the Beach Clean-up, Alzheimer’s Walk, Relay for Life, United Way, and benefit activities for the Buckner Children and Family Services organization. Plant employees contributed more than 1,500 hours to community activities.
To hone its emergency response skills, Port Arthur Plant employees conducted and participated in multiple drills, practicing equipment deployment, communication tactics, and coordination with local and government officials. The plant put its emergency preparation efforts into action when dealing with the real-world impact of Hurricane Rita.
The Port Arthur Plant also made significant advancements in pollution prevention. Implementing a program to minimize emissions generated from vacuum truck operations during maintenance activities, the plant selected a specialty contractor with state-of-the-art emission control systems. Air monitoring performed during the vacuum truck operations revealed non-detectable emissions from the exhaust, demonstrating a direct, positive impact on the environment, the safe operation of the plant, and the overall health of plant employees.
Additionally, the Port Arthur Plant instituted an enhanced Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program that is projected to reduce emissions from fugitive components, including connectors and flanges. This proactive approach uses actual emissions data to refine estimates related to fugitive emissions.
The Port Arthur Plant also has an excellent safety record, with zero recordable injuries in 2005.
Besides the Port Arthur Plant, four other Chevron Phillips Chemical facilities were recognized with the Caring for Texas awards, including the Cedar Bayou Plant, Pasadena Plastics Complex, Sweeny Complex, and Orange Plant. Each facility received a plaque to commemorate the achievement.
