Performance Pipe wins President's Safety Award

PLANO, TEXAS (April 2, 2008) – Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) recently announced that its ten-site Performance Pipe division is a recipient of the 2007 President’s Safety Award – the company’s highest safety honor. The award follows Performance Pipe’s safest year ever.

“We are proud to present Performance Pipe with the President’s Safety Award for demonstrating our culture of safety in their day-to-day operations,” said Greg Hanggi, Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety. “We take safety and our commitment to an injury and incident-free workplace very seriously. Performance Pipe is a great example of engaged leadership, broad participation and effective safety improvement processes,” Hanggi said.

The entire ten-site Performance Pipe division of Chevron Phillips Chemical won the 2007 President’s Safety Award with a 57 percent reduction in recordable injuries for the year. Performance Pipe’s total recordable injury rate is almost 10 times better than the industry average for plastic pipe and fittings manufacturers. Seven of 10 Performance Pipe facilities finished the year with zero recordable injuries.

“The injury rate for plastic pipe manufacturing industry may be above national average, but that is unacceptable to us,” said David Morgan, General Manager of Performance Pipe. “We are committed to operating our business safely and reliably.”

In the pursuit to continually improve safety in 2007, Performance Pipe focused on enabling employees to exercise leadership in safety at every level of the organization through new and innovative processes. Increased use of mentors and coaches on the manufacturing floor aided in the reduction of injuries and near misses as well as provided an opportunity for on-the-spot questions and suggestions by employees.

Additionally, by diligently tracking observations in the existing behavioral-based safety system, areas of concern were given additional attention by plant and division management. For example, in the prior two years, hand injuries comprised 60 percent of all injuries in the Performance Pipe division.  By spotlighting hand hazards during daily safety meetings, addressing areas of high exposure, and adding specific hand hazard identification areas to safety observation forms, Performance Pipe realized a significant reduction in these injuries.

“To us, the only number that matters is zero,” said Morgan. “It is an honor to be recognized for our performance; however, for our employees and customers, we will remain focused on every facility achieving zero injuries and incidents.”
