- Filtravis™ Polymer
Filtravis™ Polymer

Filtravis™ Polymer is a new polymeric viscosifier from Drilling Specialties Company LLC. It is used in combination with bentonite to provide excellent fluid rheology properties in a variety of drilling applications. The Filtravis™ Polymer/bentonite system not only provides hole cleaning, but fluid-loss control as an added benefit. To date, the product has been used extensively in Canada.

Packaging

25-pound (11.4 kg) bags, 60 bags per pallet, stretch wrapped

Filtravis™ Polymer is typically used in fresh water containing approximately 10 ppb (28.6 kg/m3) bentonite (A 0.20-0.40 ppb (0.57-1.14 kg/m3) concentration of Filtravis™ polymer is recommended.) Native clay can be used alone, but high-quality bentonite improves the performance of the system. Filtravis™ Polymer performs best in the 9.5-10 pH range. The Filtravis™ Polymer system is a freshwater drilling fluid but still functions well in water up to 1500 ppm (mg/l) hardness or less. The temperature limitation is approximately 275°F (135°C).

Filtravis™ Polymer is compatible with most other mud products. For example, Drispac® Polymer should be used where additional fluid-loss control is needed. The addition of thinners, however, flattens the rheology profile and thereby reduces the efficiency of the material and performance of the system. Generally, this simple, effective mud system can be formulated with only bentonite, caustic soda and Drispac® Polymers.

Applications

The Filtravis™ Polymer system is recommended for wells where enhanced rheological and fluid-loss properties are necessary and for the following special applications:

  • Boost in rheology when needed to clean the hole before running casing
  • Casing milling
  • Directional drilling
  • Prehydrating bentonite for use in seawater mud
  • Primary mud system
  • Small bore drilling
  • Top hole drilling
Advantages

In addition to its beneficial fluid-loss and flow properties, effective hole cleaning and environmental acceptability, Filtravis™ Polymer also produces the many advantages of using a polymeric low-solids mud system: well bore stabilization, high penetration rates, better solids control, less susceptibility to contamination and superior material logistics. The overall savings on drilling fluid operations compared to conventional gel-chemical systems is the critical economic benefit provided by Filtravis™ Polymer.

Viscosity Data

A comparison of viscosities produced by one ppb (2.86 kg/m3) of Filtravis™ Polymer, PAC and xanthan gum in a fresh water bentonite slurry is shown below. The positive interaction of Filtravis™ Polymer with the bentonite clay is clearly seen in the results. Higher viscosity with lower bentonite concentrations is the primary benefit of a Filtravis™ Polymer mud system.

Typical Field Results

The Filtravis™ Polymer system was used extensively in central Alberta, Canada. This is an area where considerable well data was available to compare the cost and performance of a Filtravis™ Polymer/bentonite system against the conventional gel-chemical system routinely used in the area. The seven wells in this study averaged 4,648 ft (1,417 m) in depth. The different mud systems were used in the main hole section and were mudded up between 3,772 and 4,231 ft (1,150 and 1,290 m). The charts below demonstrate that the Filtravis™ Polymer system was cost effective in material used and in providing the hole cleaning needed to drill the wells successfully.
