“From a Saudi and Qatar perspective, diversity comes up in a lot of different ways.  First, we have folks from all countries of the world, which is driven by economics, skill sets, regional relationships, local nationalization goals, security issues, and overall business and living environment. We have to be open to recruit from everywhere to make sure we have a strong team.

The positive of having a global workforce is taking the blend of skills and life experiences and using them to create new businesses and solve problems.  With this many different viewpoints, you are sure to find a good solution or idea. We try to encourage diversity by making sure everyone feels empowered to speak up and contribute to the discussion.  In some cultures, people will defer to others and not speak up.  This is a waste of talent.  We go to great lengths to recruit and bring in skilled people so we want to hear from everyone.  It is not easy to get people to speak up, so you need to lead by example to show how to do it.  We will often use three or four different languages for training purposes to make sure we have complete understanding by everyone.  Again, if someone does not understand they cannot contribute to the fullest.”

We encourage input throughout our organization and not only in a job function or area of experience, but also outside of the normal "silo" of day-to-day activities.  This has benefited Performance Pipe in many ways, with a prime example being our safety process.  Overall our facilities are seven to eight times safer, based on recordable injury rate, than Pipe's industry average.  We utilize a process where all employees have the opportunity to observe and have input into corrective actions in work procedures, processes, and environment before an injury occurs.  It is only through trust in each other and looking at diverse observations and ideas that we are able to continually improve and target zero injuries throughout our organization.”

“The Zhangjiagang polystyrene plant benefits from a diverse workforce in many ways such as directing a variety of views and experiences towards improving the safe operation of the facility. In addition to the benefits of sharing and contributing with other Chevron Phillips Chemical staff/facilities outside of China, we benefit from the internal diversity of our Chinese workforce. Contrary to some perceptions, each area of China contributes substantial differences in culture and outlook.  The Zhangjiagang Polystyrene plant employs a workforce from 13 different provinces in China.  Some come from as far away as the northern border with Russia (Heilongjiang), some near the Southern Chinese City of Hong Kong (Guangdong) and some near the southwestern border with Nepal (Sichuan).  So through the diversity of our employees and within China itself, we are better able to meet the challenges of manufacturing in Jiangsu and marketing our products throughout all of China.”
