Benzene LTLD Benzene

Chevron Phillips Chemical manufactures high-purity benzene at its Pascagoula Refinery, its Guayama, Puerto Rico Plant and its Saudi Chevron Phillips Petrochemical Plant (a joint venture facility).

How It's Made

Benzene is produced from five main sources:

  • Catalytic reforming of naphtha
  • Dealkylation of toluene
  • Recovery from ethylene plant pyrolysis gasoline
  • Coke oven
  • Selective toluene disproportionation

Newer technologies such as Chevron Phillips Chemical's Aromax® benzene production technology are expected to be utilized more in the future because of low-cost feedstocks (C6-C7 and C3-C4 paraffins).

How It's Transported

Our benzene is primarily transported by vessel and barge, but a limited quantity is transported by pipeline. We do not ship benzene in tank cars or tank trucks.

What It's Used For

Benzene has many uses, and demand continues to grow despite increasing restrictions and environmental regulations. Creation of styrene monomer is the largest use of benzene, followed by cumene/phenol, cyclohexane, and nitrobenzene. Those derivatives are used to produce a wide range of plastics, fibers, resins and films. Benzene is also an excellent solvent for waxes, resins, rubber and various other organic materials, but toxicological properties greatly limit use.
