Chevron Phillips Chemical manufactures byproduct toluene at its styrene plant in St. James, Louisiana, which is marketed as commercial grade toluene (95% min. toluene).
How It's Made Nearly all of the toluene manufactured in the United States is derived from petroleum. Historically most toluene was consumed to produce benzene by dealkylation or in gasoline blending to improve octane.
How It's Transported
Chevron Phillips Chemical's toluene is currently transported to its various customers by barges.
What It's Used For Toluene is consumed in toluene disproportionation units to produce benzene and mixed xylenes. Installations of the Mobil Selective Toluene Disproportionation Process (MSTDP) have been increased dramatically in recent years to support the demand for paraxylene feedstocks. Some other uses include explosives (TNT) and detergents (toluene sulfonates and solvents).
