Normal octyl mercaptan (n-octyl mercaptan, 1-octanethiol, NOM, CAS # 111-88-6) is used in many diverse applications. In free-radical polymerization systems, it acts as a chain transfer agent to control molecular weight. A variety of antioxidants and stabilizers are produced from it as a chemical intermediate.
