While polyalphaolefins offer many technical performance advantages, their biodegradability and environmentally friendly nature addresses a critical need in many sensitive applications. Although PAOs are not bio-based, they provide the technical advantages that combine well with vegetable and other bio-based oils. This is because PAOs can add oxidative stability and low temperature properties on to the lubricant formulation.

In addition, since some polyalphaolefins are biodegradable, they can be formulated with vegetable-based oils, eliminating the performance problems often associated with this type of product in a bio-based and biodegradable lubricant or hydraulic fluid. Other environmental benefits that are often overlooked and are also inherent in PAO products is their low frictional properties that reduce energy consumption and the oxidative stability which allows for longer lubricant life thus reducing waste.
